Graham Jones is a land-use planner, technical author and consultant. He operates primarily in the field of leisure geography, but it is his love for all things map-related that led him into working with GIS. He uses GIS as part of his own project work for clients, as well as for other consultancies who require this service.

Not so long ago GIS was largely unaffordable for small practitioners- who would like to use it as part of their work, but are neither professionally trained, nor have the resources of a big company. Times have changed and there is now some wonderful open source software that anyone can download and use/self-learn. In conjunction with the open source base data available from the government and maps from Ordnance Survey, GIS is accessible to all! Check out QGIS below:
