About the author

Graham Jones is a land-use planner, technical author and consultant. He operates primarily in the field of leisure geography, but it is his love for all things map-related that led him into working with GIS. He uses GIS as part of his own project work for clients, as well as for other consultancies who require this service.

Map

Taken from downloadable open source government data. This map simply displays the number of recorded traffic accidents in small census areas in 2015. Data are held on precise location, weather conditions, severity of accidents etc, but this map simply shows the total number of recorded accidents in small census areas (Lower Super Output Areas) and those locations with more than 25 recorded accidents in 2015. Unsurprisingly, the worst totals are recorded mostly in urban areas, but this can be misleading. There are many rural areas with high numbers of accidents, and when the smaller population levels are taken into account, the number of accidents relative to population can be alarmingly high. I’ll probably come back to this subject because there is so much to say about it. In the meantime drive safely.
